Yowza! That's a lovely copper! I went back to page 3, and was surprised that the 2 1/2 an 5 baiocco coins I posted for the 1790s were lower in weight. Maybe Napoleon needed copper for shells ?

Possibly there was a general realisation that linking the value of the coin to the value of the copper and carrying around a great weight as change wasn't a great idea The outcry against the British "cartwheel" penny and twopence from 1797 was well known. This one was a lucky spot on ebay that only cost me £9.

On page 2 of this threat I posted a Leo XII 1824 1/2 Baiocco which was a bit rough so I had the opportunity to upgrade it. New example below

Another addition - really another year addition of a type I have a few examples of - but the date here appears to be unusual. It looks like a 1 over a 0.for 1761. Clement XIII 1/2 Grosso

A new addition, a cautionary tale and a good news outcome. Somewhat impulsively I bought the below coin - a Benedict XIV dated 1756 2 Giuli. I though it looked familiar but didn't think I already had it. I then realised I already had the below coin - a Benedict XIV dated 1756 2 Giuli But on closer inspection it turns out it was a different coin after all (I won't say what it is but should be easy to spot.) - so all's well that ends well , but it's just a reminder that it's best to check and not to rely on memory.
