Yes - these Quattrino's are all copper coins. Next one is this variant. Similar to the one above but with the reverse legend starting at 7 o'clock and EPISCO instead of E P.EVGV Obverse: BENE: XIV.P — Papal heraldic achievement Reverse: S.UBALDV EPISCO — St Ubaldus standing

We are in the process of moving, so I seem to always be behind on CCF ... Quote: Benedict XIV - 1/2 Baiocco (1750) A Jubilee&-year issue from the Ferrara mint featuring the Holy Door, symbol of indulgence and spiritual renewal. The radiant triangle represents the Trinity. This example apparently doesn't align with any of the variants listed on Numista. The Oval Lambertini arms are bowed to the left - however the lettering is definitely BEN. XIV M. A. IVB. CI#42203;#1632;I#42203;#1632;C.C.L. One to investigate further
There were a couple of enormous sales of Papal coppers held by InAsta in 2024. Some of these Ravenna Jubilee issues came up in Auction 114 in October. As you say, the shield side of your coin nearly matches this one attributed as Muntoni 582: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=13404616.That example has a perfectly egg-shaped shield, whereas yours is somewhere between oval and heart-shaped (there is a dimple at the top, and the bottom skews left a bit). The cadence of the lettering on the gate side is a closer match to this one, identified as Muntoni 580: https://www.acsearch.info/search.html?id=13404617So, possibly a mule (580/582), which gets more common with more die varieties.

Thanks very much tdziemia. You are most likely correct in that it is a mule though with the amount of varieties catalogued for many of the coins of this period the distinction between variety and mule does get somewhat blurred. I've found an online Italian language site that helps a lot with identifying the Muntoni numbers - though like many such sites it's not fully comprehensive but still excellent. A copy of Muntoni would be ideal - but alas prohibitively expensive. Quote: There were a couple of enormous sales of Papal coppers held by InAsta in 2024. I missed those sales and my wallet thanks me very much

Quote: I missed those sales and my wallet thanks me very much I put in half-hearted bids on a couple of quattrini (the starting prices were all deceptively low), but didn't succeed. On the other hand, I nabbed a nice Florence grosso (but paid a lot more than I would have paid for a nice Gubbio or Ravenna quattrino)

A bit worn but rather unusual reverse design for a Benedict XIV - 1 Quattrino (ND, 1744) from the Ravenna mint with the Pine branch and cone. The numista example https://en.numista.com/306959 suggests that the 1744 date appears in the exergue of the reverse but it's not clear if that is the case with this example. Although it is unfortunately worn there doesn't seem to be enough room to have that date on this coin when comparing to the Numista example..

Quote: I think I can find several die matches for that defective reverse die, suggesting that it is indeed a 1744: Thanks you for that confirmation.
