Greetings again from NYC. I recently inherited my grandfather's stamp and coin collection. After a a number of VERY productive exchanges on the Stamp Forum, I wanted to give this forum a try. I have been wracking my brains trying to make heads or tails - pun intended - of this old gold coin... at least I think it's a coin. Does anyone have any thoughts or suggestions?

Thank YOU! The diameter is 2.4cm; thickness less than .5mm. I don't have the tool to measure weight but can tell you it is extremely thin and light. Hope that helps. Let me know if you need anything else.

Hello and welcome.

Sorry, but this is neither gold nor a coin. It's a brass jeton or rechenpfennig, a kind of token originally made for use on a counting-board, a mediaeval chequerboard that was used kind of like an abacus to help people do mathematics back when everybody still wrote numbers using Roman numerals. This is a rose and orb type of the style commonly made in Nuremberg, Germany, probably from the 1400s or 1500s judging by the style of lettering. See the top token on this page for a very similar example.

That's what I was afraid of. Thanks for the feedback, though.
