PCGS - A brass coil was struck into the reverse of this 1888 Liberty nickel. The coil fell out of the coin and survived to accompany the indented nickel. This piece last sold for $15,600. Now that's a Mint Error Monday.

Just a question to ponder here.

Brass is a relatively soft metal compared, for example, to steel. Even so, an object the size of this coil may well have left some type of damage on the reverse die. I wonder if there are other 1888 nickels that show some residual damage from this event?

The search itself wouldn't be too difficult. The obverse die has a distinct die chip between the top of the "1" and the bottom of the portrait. The key complications would be the relative scarcity of 1888 nickels in higher grades, the obvious die state of this particular die pair, and whether the mint polished the reverse dies soon after this event.

It may be a futile rabbit-chasing event, but it could be an interesting project for someone who wants to research and write the most niche article in Liberty nickel history.

An interesting thought @fort. I just looked on the pcgs website showing approximately 30 mint state or near mint state examples, and none of them had that diagnostic die chip. For sure not close to a representative sample, but it makes me wonder whether this coin was perhaps a bit of mint sport on the final use of the dies?

Well, I took a run through some of the 350 1888 non-proof ha.com sales from present running back through 2018 as I was sitting around watching TV. I didn't find any examples with that obverse die chip.
