I'd like to get a book that helps identify Half Cents and large cents varieties, understand the various "codes" such as N-8, R-2, etc.
Is this book a good resource or does anyone have other recommendations?

@gar, I've moved your thread to a better subforum to get you the answers you need. While you wait for some replies, consider searching through here with the keywords LARGE CENT and Half Cent as you will find several previous threads asking a similar question. To help get you started on your research, here is a link to one such thread:

I know a bit late to this thread, but if you are still looking...

See the Ed Fuhrman books here is my review of one of them.

The NNP has both editions of Cohens book in PDF for free, and there is always the Manley Half Cent Die States for advanced collectors, check out the Missouri Cabinet Collection auction catalog by Goldmans, there you can see some of the finest known examples of each variety and date in the series.

For what you are seeking for Half Cents I recommend 4 of the 6 Ed Fuhrman books that were released in the last four years or so.....but I'd get all 6 of them, but here are the 4 to start.

The Half Cent Handbook: Liberty Cap Varieties 1793-1797
The Half Cent Handbook: Draped Bust Varieties 1800-1808
The Half Cent Handbook: Classic Head and Braided Hair Varieties
The Half Cent Handbook: Ultimate Attribution Guide (I'd get them all but this one first) https://www.coinbooks.org/v26/esylu...6n36a04.html
