2023 D Quarter Is This A Doubled Die?

Coins4ourkids New Member United States 47 Posts	Posted 03/02/2025 1:55 pm Hi All, I just came across this quarter and there is a lot of doubling on the obverse. Is this a doubled die or Machine Doubling? I'm fairly new and still trying to learn the difference in appearance. Also the ear appears to be doubled on lower lobe. Not sure how well the pics will come through but in addition to doubling on most of the letters the D mint mark is clearly doubled and when looking at it in person one D is slightly different angle then the second D. TeeEss86 Valued Member United States 181 Posts	Posted 03/02/2025 10:51 pm Machine Doubling " Machine Doubling" refers to a coin error where the design appears slightly doubled due to the die shifting slightly during the striking process, caused by loose machinery, while "Doubled die" refers to a genuine doubling of the design on the die itself, meaning the doubled image was created during the die making process, not during the coin strike; essentially, Machine Doubling is a striking error, while double dye is a die error.
