The more I look, the more I am having a tough time believing that this is a pre-burial phenomenon. How could circulation wear remove all the hair details, but leave the bumps standing that far above the surface? I would speculate that some chemical in the soil pulled specific impurities out of the coin faces, leaving this bubbled up appearance.

Also, the examples of gas bubbles on Error-Ref.com seem to have much bigger and uneven bubbles. The ones on this coin are like tiny, perfectly formed little beads.

BM - plenty of examples out there with small bubbles. Error-ref only shows the one reference. I looked at those first and then pulled up others - including small bubbles in slabs. The wear is still an issue that needs to be addressed however.

Very interesting, maybe rust from a rusted die?

Surely possible but with several ruptured ceilings found I think gas bubbles more likely. And like others have observed, inconsistent wear suggests post mint heat (or chems) brought them to the surface after the coin had been circulated.

But interesting nonetheless.
