With raw 3$ gold pieces I'd be more concerned with authenticity rather than an actual grade.
$3's were one of the most counterfeited gold coins in the 1960's and 70's and they still show up today.

Thanks for your replies. It looks genuine to me. Though yes, always a challenge purchasing raw. Anyone else have input on grade/authenticity issues?

Assuming it's genuine, I would guess AU Details-Cleaned. It does not look like a candidate for TPG but it would be good to have it authenticated. |

AU Cleaned, not certain on authenticity. I would NOT purchase this coin as genuine from these photos.

for a higher grade coin the surfaces look off. either cleaned or fake,.
get a weight on her and maybe take her to an LCS to test for gold. if the weight is correct

In regard to taking to a LCS to test for gold, does a LCS typically charge for testing and if so, what would be a reasonable fee? Thanks

Thanks This piece is worth several multiples of its gold value if genuine. It's a better date U.S. G$3 that might be 90% gold (worth $400) and still a counterfeit. I'd send it to ANACS for authentication. Then you'll know what you have. It's a $2000 retail value piece with XF Details - Cleaned. |
