Hi gang I just got turned on to this area of this forum and I need to defuse a ring light what kind of medium should I use? it's a variable intensity lite and I want to put this medium in the plastic lenses in front of the bulbs and switch mediums as my needs change I made the Lense removable Thanx in advance  |

Parchment is good. So is translucent tracing paper. Even a a portion of a (clean...) milk carton can work.

What ? am I thinking you said milk carton? isn't that thick? too thick for light to pass

I used regular paper and it worked fine cutting the bulb reflection I was going to bundle a couple of pieces and try that and also get some different colored paper to try

To diffuse the illumination from my ring light, I use paper towel - one or two layers as needed.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Milk carton--the plastic jug type. It's usable if other options aren't available.

I recommend Canson Opalux. It diffuses well, ie it spreads the light out so there are no obvious light sources, and it has good transmittance, ie you don't lose a lot of light going through it. Canson products are sold in most art stores or you can order from a place like Blick. It comes in 19"x24" sheets so it will last a long time making various diffusers.

I cut a milk jug top off, place it over the coin, and snap a pic thru the open hole. I also bought a good variety in various grades of semi-transparent "film" found on places like Amazon or ebay. All work well but only for specific instances. |

I use quite a variety like various plastics, papers, light angles, photo boxes and a polarized camera filter. My photos can be hit or miss. Some really good, some others never happy about. Depends on the nature of the coin. I collect them from stunningly new to old and cruddy.
