Anyone collect Isle of Man coins? I'm an American but I've been living over on the Isle of Man for almost 3 years now for my job. They produce a lot of interesting coins over here and I figured there would probably be some IOM collectors out there. Anyone?

Hi and welcome. I am also American but I live in southern England.
I have found 4 different Isle of Man coins in circulation over here and I do agree that they are rather interesting.

I have some Isle of Man coins, as part of my One From Every Country collection, but I wouldn't consider myself an "Isle of Man collector"
Part of the problem with the Isle of Man series is the huge array of made-for-collectors coins. It's virtually impossible to garner an interest in becoming an "Isle of Man collector", since acquiring the full series of Isle of Man coins would be almost impossible to complete; I've never heard of anybody even trying.
Isle of Man (or rather, the Pobjoy Mint that makes Manx coins) aims their coins at topical or thematic collectors. You buy Isle of Man coins because you like ships, or buildings, or cats, or motorcycles, or whatever... not because you like Isle of Man coins.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis

Most of the coins from the isle of man are made for collectors and they are poorly designed. Not good to look at.

Most of the Pobjoy Mint coins definitely seem to be aimed towards collectors but I wouldn't say they are all poorly design. I've seen a few neat ones while over here. I've picked up a few of the random special edition coins like the Tutankhamun triangle coins, which I think are neat looking. The new Tutankhamun coins with the sand in the triangle are pretty neat looking, imo, but they are all priced pretty high. I really like the new Seven Wonders of the Modern World series this year as I find them appealing. I mainly collect gold and silver bullion and don't really care for any of the Isle of Man bullion coins for the most part.
If any of you ever have the chance to see this island, it's definitely an interesting place to visit. It's always seemed a little slower than the rest of the world and like a step back in time, to some degree. After being here for 3 years, I've had enough of actually living here but it is a very scenic place to visit if you're ever in the area and not here during the winter months.

Funny enough, I was looking through some old change and it turns out I have quite a few Isle of Man coins , they really are interesting and of all the non-UK coins I have got in change , the Isle of Man ones are the most common I come across . I do say their 20p coin is quite pretty !

We get a lot of them here in change. There seems to be a lot of traffic between the Isle of Man and Northern Ireland.

Well, I have just come back to collecting and I collect Isle of Man but the real ones not modern. The last one being 1839. There are some on E Bay, but most are rather inflated prices as far as I can see, I have picked up a few there but not many. There are a few dealers with iom but it can be a bit difficult to find in their lists because of where they put them. Geoff

I agree with SAP, the IOM coins are interesting but very thematic. That said we are starting on the Christmas 50p ones! We also have a few of the Crowns. Apart from ebay and Pobjoy Mint anybody any ideas where we can buy some?- both mentioned sites seem over priced outlets.

If I still had cats at my house, I would probably get the cat coins.

There is a shop on the Isle of Man that advertises in Coin News, but there are also plenty of dealers, and also auctions other than E Bay which sometimes have them. Geoff.

I did start to collect I.O.M coins some years back but got put off by the numbers and cost when I realised how many they do. Also I agree with the above that most are not good designs. I was shocked by the almost total lack of interest when I tried to sell them. In the end I sold to a well known London dealer who gave me a reasonable deal as I used the credit to buy their coin. Still made a loss though, but the coin I got in exchange is still one of my favourites, an 1887 young head 6d.

I agree, when I sold mine in 2005 I lost a lot on the modern silver. The early ones I did well, and that is what I am buying now. There are some interesting varieties especially the 1733 issue. I already have six pennies, most different. Some of the ones on E Bay are not good, I am avoiding it and only buying from reputable dealers. Geoff.
