I also collect the 'rabbit ears'. The 1985 is the rarest, and IMHO should be worth more than a mule. I know of less that half a dozen.

I collect the 2001 upsets, they are really hard to find sometimes. I brought one on ebay because I was strugling to find one & no others were listed & then a few days later I got one in change. I've got three now, I'd love to collect all the clock faces for them. Is anyone selling a mule? I know a chap who's really into errors who may be willing to pay a reasonable amount or maybe even do some decent trade...

Sometimes I want to post a trade for a mule, and then I step back and realise that to find 400 dollars to trade with isn't easy :(

Australia Post will only provide compensation up to $100. It is my understanding that a Pay Pal refund doesn't apply if the seller can prove that it was sent by registered mail. In any case, Australia Post have admitted that they have lost it and the seller was more than helpful in the whole matter so I'm not interested in squeezing the money out of him. I am curious what has happened to my mule though. Perhaps this is reason some mules are still showing up in circulation.

What do you mean by the person who made them up being clever? A genuine mule is not manufactured outside of the mint but is a result of dies not intended to be used together accidentally being used. Not clever... very stupid of the mint actually. As to the best place to get one it depends on what type you want. I am aware of several mule types but there are no doubt many more. They range in rarity and grade and therefore value also.

I'm sure that someone has posted a pic, in another thread, Fredd. This mule isn't very striking in appearance. It's a 10-cent obverse, couple with a $1 reverse & planchet. The 10-cent is only slightly smaller than the one-dollar. So you still see QE2 exactly where she ought to be, but there is a "double rim" on that side. Often the obverse is not perfectly centred, so the double-rim is only partial, and there is some variation in what has been found. Once you understand the nature of the error, they look obvious. Non-collectors usually fail to grasp the subtlety of it.
