Dear Coinforme, I started collecting cents in about 1960, when I was 10. The best went in a Whitman folder and stayed there for many, many years. Other collectors have also posted similar coloured cents. The books and 2x2s that were used back in the 1960's to house the coins used dyes or material that could cause some discolouration. Even the Mint used red backing in some sets in the 1970's that left red stains. Most of the coloured coins I ended up with have a red tint, which I attribute to the use of eosin during the making of cellulose tape and cellophane. The stains on my 2x2s come from old cellulose tape.
Coins were saved dirty. I had 100's of unsealed, reused 2x2's all stored in an array of tin cans, wooden trays, plastic drawers, in a myriad of different climate conditions, from basement apartment cupboard floor, where outside temps could be -20F, to close to 100F Montreal summers.
Here are some of my previous posts of bluish coloured coins. Most came through years of roll hunting, not from my original few.

ebay between 2000 and 2010. It had broken cellophane held together with cellulose tape.
