I'm a huge fan of monarch butterflies! I am even trying to grow milkweed plants in my backyard to try to keep monarchs from fading away. It's just sad to me that the artist who drew the halve-kilo coin evidently has never seen what a real monarch looks like, as that design is way off.

I think the blame lies elsewhere, Ms. Heine submitted a painting to the Mint that accurately captured the Monarch butterfly in its natural environment - its conversion by others to Murano glass is where things went slightly awry.

BTW, Ms. Heine also planted milkweed in her garden to attract Monarch butterflies.

My apologies to Ms. Heine. The info explains nicely.

@atticguy: Do you have either of the Mint's previous Monarch butterfly coins (2016 or 2023)?

@commems: Sorry, but no. I've acquired almost all Canadian coinage with $2 or less denominations, but I put the brakes on anything higher.

I know nothing about butterflies but honestly, the artwork looks stunning.

IMO, it's important to have defined parameters for a collection, otherwise it can get out of hand and no longer be fun! (It becomes more of a chore to keep up!)
