Not pilots, I think, but pigeon breeders/trainers. The German text says something like "For merits in the military pigeon post service". A similar (but cross shaped) decoration is mentioned here:
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kreuz_für_Verdienste_um_das_Militär-Brieftaubenwesen
Wilhelm II's portrait on the other side (by Emil Weigand) is the one that can also be found on Prussian coins from those years.

(Edit: Sorry, cannot post the URL as a clickable link here. But it's in German anyway ...)
(Edit_2: Have a look here: http://www.german-militaria.de/kata...390020_3.htm - several pieces in gold, silver, etc. Search for brief within the page.)

From the second link chrisild provided: the reference quoted for one example was "Hüsken 7.421.1", with a sale price of 2800 euros. It seems they're highly valued back in Germany...

Citizen of the state of North Rhine Westphalia, the Federal Republic of Germany, and the European Union. I do not collect medals though, and had no idea about the possible value/price of yours ... until today. Congrats!
