For those unfamiliar with New Zealand coins, they are normally minted in medal orientation. In this case the coin actually has a 90 degree rotation. Without being able to post a photo, you'll just have to take my word for it. There's a photo of the edge as well to show it's not been toyed with in a metal shop, which people sometimes do. I just recently found a 1999 with about a 45 degree rotation.

You could take a picture of it in front of a mirror like this 90 degree rotated die French 10 Francs.

Is that the sort of error that adds value? A lot? A little? I posted something similar a little while ago (NOT a New Zealand coin) but did not get a response.

It does add value, but determining how much is not easy. I've seen a similar 10 Francs for sale at $40 - it would be a $1 coin without the rotation.

Thanks, Hondo! Great idea!

So there's the 1998 with the 90 degree rotation, but I've also just recently found a 1999 with maybe a 45 degree rotation. Condition on the 1998 is not so great, but the 1999 is better, especially considering I pulled the former from circulation almost a decade ago. I found the 99 last week.

Yeah, cheers! I first started looking closely at a lot more NZ coins around 2015 after the wide/narrow date 2014 Twenty Cent coin was noticed. I was looking at some of everything, and the number of errors with one dollars really jumped out at me, especially from 2013. I got in the habit of looking at one roll of two dollar coins and two rolls of one dollar coins pretty much every week since then. And these two twos with a die rotation are the only significant ones I've found from any denomination! And I do check each coin for it.

Not sure if this error is known in this catalog. Finding two error coins is amazing!

Well, @gxseries, I found them almost a decade apart, but they're pretty uncommon in my experience. I have had someone who owns a small business here tell me he has found such things from time to time, but he's not ever held onto one, so......

Contacting Mowbrays is a good idea. I know them from over the years on TradeMe as well. I've also inquired on the Royal Numismatic Society of NZ page on FaceBook. Small coin community here anyway, but it seems an uncommon defect. Looking around a few years ago I seem to recall an Aussie one or two dollar coin with a similar rotation that sold for a couple hundy, but I don't recall where I found that. I forget now what the condition was.

There are some 'common' Aussie rotated error coins

These are two:

May not be the best condition but it's pretty nice to find them from circulation!

Nice, gx! I was over in Oz this year for the first time and noticed the first coins with King Chuck floating around. Wish I could have gotten a roll or two more to search, but all rolls I got were older varieties.

I believe Jason manages this site, though it seems it may have been a while since it was updated. I probably still have his email address as I've sent him photos of a few things I've found. It's a pretty detailed and meticulously managed catalogue.

ETA: that error catalogue on Mowbray's site is sold out. I might reach out to a few people to see if it's still available elsewhere or is going to have more copies printed.
