Finally ... goodbye to the penny. Just announced today, Thursday, 5.22.2025 - Treasury Dept placed its last order for blanks earlier this month, and once those run out, no more minting of pennies. See article: https://www.businessinsider.com/tre...-doge-2025-5

This reply was split into its own topic for the proper attention. And attention, it will get.

Even though we all saw this coming, it's still bittersweet as a numismatist. Important to note the Treasury is stopping production of the cent, rather than eliminating it (which would require an act of Congress). Essentially the same situation as the dollar coin in 2012. What the news articles fail to mention is whether production will continue for collectors only. I for one hope we will still have NIFC cents, preferably in the old 95% copper. Time will tell. . .

My question is, how long is this "last order" contact for? One year-10 years?

Since they are no longer buying zinc blanks, they have no choice but to go old school and use bronze. That also gives them an excuse to raise the prices again.

The bipartisan bill in Congress to make it official has a clause for the minting of the cent for collectors. The composition of said cent would be at the discretion of the Treasury. I smell a collectors cent of 95 pct copper or maybe even pure copper coming soon.
Canadian collectors cents varied from 98 pct to pure copper from 1997-2012.
