The reverse of the 2017 Boys Town Copper-Nickel (CuNi) Clad Half Dollar presents a Boys Town neighborhood surmounted by four young adults, each depicted wearing a graduation cap and gown to represent his/her completion of the Boys Town program in addition to graduating from High School. Seen among the diverse collection of graduates is an African-American male (second from left).

Boys Town, founded by Father Edward J. Flanagan in 1917 in Omaha, Nebraska, has become one of the largest non-profit service organizations in the United States; it serves at-risk children and families of all backgrounds and religions with a mission "to help every child and family be healthy in body, mind and spirit by delivering the right care at the right time in the right way." (Boys Town web site)

Today, Boys Town has multiple locations across the US, including in Florida, New England, Iowa, Louisiana and Nevada.

Roy Wilkins (b. 1901; d. 1981) was a prominent (and vocal) Civil Rights leader, active from the 1930s to the 1970s. He was the Executive Secretary of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) from 1955 to 1963, and served as the Association's Executive Director from 1964 to 1977.

He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by US President Lyndon Baines Johnson in 1967. In 1984, the US Congress awarded (posthumously) a Congressional Gold Medal to Wilkins; it was presented to his widow - Aminda Wilkins - by US President Ronald Reagan in 1986.

Bronze duplicates of the Gold medal were struck. I have a small, low-relief Wilkins medal in my collection; a larger, high-relief version may also have been produced, but I've yet to encounter it.

Note: The Franklin Mint struck Sterling Silver and Bronze medals in Proof during the 1980s for the NAACP; they should not be confused with the US Mint medal.

Next up, a US military officer and diplomat - Colin Powell.

General Colin Luther Powell (b. 1937; d. 2021) was a decorated US military officer (1958-1989) , the US National Security Advisor (November 1987 - January 1989), the US Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (October 1989- September 1993) and the first African-American US Secretary of State (January 2001 - January 2005) under George W. Bush.

He came to the attention of most Americans during the Persian Gulf War (1990-91) while serving as the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under George H. W. Bush (he also served under William "Bill" Clinton for several months).
