I bought one of these in August, 2014 from someone who had just returned from Australia and received it in change. He nearly spent it again before noticing that it had two heads! The coin is very near mint state. Two dealers here in NZ looked at it, weighed it and called it unquestionably genuine. If this July, 2014 Noble auction is any indicator, the price is moving up significantly. http://www.noble.com.au/auctions/lot?id=317854 Let's just say I didn't pay anywhere near that much. It's hard to believe this coin could have gone unnoticed for seven years. Are they still being released?

Yes this coin has spiked over the last 12 months in price. There was an estimate of 600-800 believed to have been issued although I think it would be closer to 150. 12 months ago EF grades were selling for the $1250-$1500, last week noticed one sell for $2500. These are not seen as regular on the selling market anymore which is now driving the price up. They are still found in circulation but the chances of finding one is close to zero

Just asking my earlier question on this coin, does someone have an explanation of how these coins were produced?

Rumour is they were made purposely by a employee at the Royal Australian mint.

Quote: Mint Sport Although the difference with these coins is that they have been found in circulation. I would like to hear the story behind that. Was the RAM employee forced to ditch his stash of mint sport before he got caught?

I have absolutely NO interest in these illegal and deliberately created "Errors" and for me they have absolutely NO numismatic value whatsoever. I treat these much the same as I would any other counterfeit coin. Before we get the arguments that these are "Kosher" and that they were made at the mint let me point out that they were deliberately made and NOT sanctioned by the mint or government, So IMHO they ARE counterfeit regardless of where they were manufactured .

yeah a lot of people would disagree with you. Regardless of what you think it's is worth 1000's of dollars. Your entitled to your opinion though and I respect that. And I'm pretty sure if you found one you wouldn't throw it away!
