Those pictures are great, now I am more confused than before. I can understand your thought of ridge being incused. Need others to give opinions.

sure looks like a stain to me. Metal like this does have microscopic pores that junk can get into and not able to get cleaned off after it 'sets' in.

Is it possible to get a closer pic to show the grooves of the area? Id like to see the metal is folding or imprinted or something
