Hi I'm looking for a book to help me identify U.S. error coins. The books that I'm finding seem to be about teaching techniques and identifying the different types of errors. I would like to buy a book that actually shows the specific coin and error. For example if I have a 1960 D penny, I would like to look up 1960 D Penny and see the different errors associated with it, with a picture. Is there a book like this and/or website?

Maybe others will be able to help you with books, I do not own a single one. I started searching coins in 2011 and branched out even more in 2017. Because of my late start, I had access to so much on the internet, I never gave a book the first thought. The key is finding good, reliable sites, with people that are known well in the Coin World. Here are sites that are just that. Many of the "error" sites, you can plug in the date and it will narrow down your search.

After I thought about what you said, if you have a 60D small date, there are a bunch of clashes if you want to dig in deep.

The " Cherry Pickers Guide" books are a solid, expertly written reference and have exactly what you are looking for in a reference book. However, these books do not show the die stages, and there are more varieties than these books cover. So, as already mentioned, the websites that -makecents- has kindly listed are an invaluable and necessary tool.

The short answer is no. The errors and varieties aspect of coin collecting is divided into silos by taxonomy. It isn't organized around the hunt. The information exists as catalogs and individual articles.

For example, when I searched my friend's Ike hoard for varieties, the very first thing I had to do was cobble together a hunt list from Wexler, Variety Vista, Ike Group, Cuds on Coins, MAD Die Clashes, and so forth. My hunt list was organized by year-mintmark.

If you have a specific year-mintmark-denomination in mind, then you can post your initial hunt list for that year. The folks here are extremely helpful in filling in many obscure errors and varieties that you might never have otherwise learned about.

There is no such book or listing for an error for a specific coin.
Any error can occur on any year or denomination. Study what types of
errors there are and you can apply them to any coin.
A good source with photos is error- ref.com
Also errors and varieties are too completely different things so if you
are looking for a Doubled Die, that would be a variety, not an error.
