Just came across this fairly attractive 1861 halfpenny in one of my "unresearched" boxes, meaning coins I haven't looked at in over 35 years.
I'm not detecting indicators of any of the known varieties, so for now I'm presuming that this is the common plain-vanilla 1861.
Conmfirmation, anyone? Many thanks in advance! "If everything seems to be under control, you're just not going fast enough." --- Mario Andretti

I'm not an expert on the Bun Halfpenny varieties - just getting one example of every date in Fine or better condition is quite an achievement - but yours looks pretty normal to me and is in exceptional condition for one of these coins. They worked hard for a living and most of the ones you see are extremely worn. I think this series is greatly underappreciated and greatly undervalued - just try looking for problem-free Fine specimens of any date. I think part of the reason is that collectors prefer the bigger, more glamorous pennies, which have been studied more thoroughly for varieties by Peck, Freeman and others.

I know this is an old thread ,but want to reply. It seems to be a Freeman obverse 4 reverse G, rarity R13 according to freeman, but it could be more or less now.

Rob & Safi -- My thanks to both of you for your input on this, I've never collected Britain by date, so particular die characteristics have escaped me entirely. (Now I'll have to see if I can figure out what Freeman's R13 means.)
Safi, the thread is only four days old! I know things move fast around here, but...

Probably reading it as DD/MM/YYYY versus MM/DD/YYYY.

Safi, me too, obviously, but I find that sometimes more coffee helps!

And thank you, nickelsearcher -- very interesting! With over 8.5 million struck in all flavors I'm not very comfortable asserting that my bog-standard farthing is that scarce, but who am I to question Freeman, right?
