PCGS - A hole was drilled into this 1795 Flowing Hair Dollar's blank planchet, and a silver plug was inserted to bring it up to legal weight under the Coinage Act of 1792. It recently realized for $115,312 at GreatCollections.
I wonder why a hole was drilled into the blank planchet. Even more interesting is why it was filled and minted, instead of melting it into a new planchet. It still is a fine looking coin.
