After I went to my "dump" bank to cash four boxes of bank-rolled half dollars I purchased a few days ago, I decided to drive to the branch of a local bank in the next town where I haven't had much luck finding silver coins because it has an on-site coin-counting machine. This time the young teller told me he had two half dollars and a few "silver dollars" that I could purchase.

Tellers previously have used that term to describe Eisenhower dollars. When he held up the half dollars and the other coins, I saw that the top half dollar was a silver coin and the top "silver dollar" was what I expected. I bought all of them for $6.

I was stunned when I examined the coins in my car. The other four dollar coins were two Morgan silver dollars and two discolored Peace silver dollars! I returned to the bank and gave the teller a Dunkin' gift card. I showed him one of the Morgan dollars. "Do you remember who gave you the dollar coins?" I asked. He replied "I've had them for a while. They were turned in by the owner of a liquor store." But he didn't remember which one was that customer.

I've seen comments from other CRHs recommending to ask liquor store and convenience store employees if they have any half dollars because down-on-their-luck customers sometimes raid their collections to purchase alcohol or cigarettes. Good advice.

Halfamind:

the 1890 Morgan dollar and both Peace dollars were struck at the Philadelphia mint. The other Morgan dollar is a 1921-D. None of them have special numismatic value.

but that is an awesome score, nonetheless. geez, I need to make some new friends (at my bank). 100+ year old silver dollars, even if low numismatic value, acquired at face... i'd do that all day every day. here's hoping you can do that again!!
