Hi,

I have this pair of 2 pence coins.

One is a Victoria 1838 2 Pence and the other is a 1906 2 pence. Both have clearly circulated, particularly the Victoria one. Both are well know as maundy coins

I understand the Victoria 2 pence also circulated as general currency in places such as British Guiana, but would anyone know if the Edward VII also circulated as such? I can't find anything that specifies where it might have used in general commerce.

Nope, the mintage and "prooflike" description in the catalogues indicates the 1902 was also only struck for Maundy purposes. Though in 1902, "Maundy" coins were not restricted to just the officially distributed Maundy sets; any collector could order a Maundy set (or an individual coin) from the Mint, if they wished. Mintages are resultantly higher (14,000 for the 1902 tuppence). It's "circulation" is therefore either incidental (from careless handling and storage) or accidental, just as for any Maundy-only coin.

The British Guiana tuppences were only struck in the period 1838-1848. So your Victoria tuppence is almost certainly one of those.

Sap - thanks for that reply. Yes it has been knocking around for 100 years or more so a bit of wear might be expected - I was wondering if they might have actually got used somehow given the extent of it.

I guess someone might have palmed it off as a 3 pence in a candle or gas lit pub somewhere but good to know they were not used as a matter of course..

Thanks for spotting that type jbuck - I'll fix in the OP.

Seems to me Maundy coins often ended up slipping into circulation. I have an 1874 Maundy fourpence and it's definitely not mint condition: I'd say it was EF wear-wise but it's got a fair few scuffs and nicks on the obverse.
