Very cool banknotes, everyone! My only example for 1980 is part of the same series that NumisRob posted, a China 1 Jiao P-881a. The obverse features Gaoshan and Manchu men wearing their traditional clothing.

China must have printed a bajillion of these things in 1980 because I've got a couple also:

They're still printing the 1980 1 jiao and 5 jiao banknotes.

Thx @augs! Ah well that might explain why they looked pretty crisp when I pulled them out of circulation only about 15 years ago.

I got a free 1980 Five Jiao from some seller who I passed on to some lucky relative (probably my nephew). 1979Now were getting into the 1970's this should be getting interesting. Here's my 2 adds today (both from "Persia"). These are 2 Revolutionary Overprints. From Numista: "After the Islamic Revolution of 1978-79, the Iranian government used numerous overprints on existing stocks of unissued paper money to obliterate Shah Pahlavi's portrait" From Iran a 200 Rials P-119a or "Type 2 overprint 'E' on P-103d: Arabesque design over Shah at right. The reverse is Shayhad Square in Tehran. Twelve-pointed star in design. https://en.numista.com/304104 The next example is Iran 500 Rials P-124b (an overprint on P-104d): The back shows "Relief of the Marlik goblet (winged bulls flanking a tree)." Notice the different overprints on the watermark window. https://en.numista.com/274925 These 2 notes are part of a 5 note set I have for Revolutionary overprints (but my set is far from complete).

The overprint makes him look like a creepy character from a Marvel movie. This 1979 Sri Lanka 5 Rupees P-84a is a recent purchase that I found for a good price at a LCS. It's part of their fantastic Endemic Flower & Fauna series. The obverse has a jungle scene with a Ceylon blue oakleaf butterfly and a Blotch Bow-finger gecko. The reverse has an adorable flying squirrel and a white-shouldered starling.

Great notes - love the flying squirrel, and the Iranian ones are most unusual! 1979 Spain 1,000 pesetas: The front of this note shows Benito Perez Galdos, a 19th-century Spanish novelist who is considered equivalent to Charles Dickens among Spaniards. The reverse of the note showcases the landscape and nature of the Canary Islands.

1979 Portugal 500 Escudos: The front of the note shows Francisco Sanches, a 17th-century philosopher and mathematician, who is considered a Portuguese hero although he may have been born in Spain, and lived much of his life in France! The reverse shows the old town square of Braga, which has changed very little over the past 300 years.

1978... Starting off 1978 with a Queen Elizabeth II Bank of England One Pound Note. This was the last type of English pound note as the denomination was replaced by a coin in 1983. The reverse shows the notable 17th-century scientist Sir Isaac Newton, famous for his theory of gravity. He was also Master of The Royal Mint during the reign of King Charles II, and oversaw the changeover from hammered to milled coinage: The low prefix on this note and the signature of JB Page date it to 1978. Spence posted a later example of this note, from 1981, with the signature of DHF Somerset and slightly revised colors on the reverse, which made the denomination and the name of Sir Isaac Newton stand out more prominently.
