Quote:Fantastic examples! -Thanks jbuck! Quote: These notes bring back many happy memories of holidays and later of working in France. That's one of the perks I love about collecting & you can't beat these French designs Rob! Interesting tidbits about the denomination too! For 1972 I present a 25 Kyat from Burma P-59 with a radar serial number. It is a large & very common note but I am a sucker for its design. https://en.numista.com/204383 Next up, & not so common, is this P-87 BC-48 $5.00 Test note from Canada: Test notes had the "RS" prefix. It features our 7th PM, Wilfrid Laurier on the front & a scene of salmon fishing boats in Johnstone Strait off Vancouver Island, British Columbia on the back. https://en.numista.com/201900

Love the banknotes from yesterday and today! Today is another one-type only year for me, a ND (1972) South Vietnam 1000 Dong P-34a. The obverse depicts the Palace of Independence, while the reverse shows Asian elephants at work with their handlers. It's a great scene, and I'm always partial to the elephant vignettes of Southeast Asia.

Lovely notes CollegeBarbers and walk2Dwater! 1971... My first note from 1971 is a Bank of England Series D £5 note depicting Queen Elizabeth II on the front and the Duke of Wellington, who led the British troops to victory at the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, on the back. This particular note can be dated to 1971 as it has a very early prefix (A06) and the signature of JB Page. Strangely I got it from my bank among other money I withdrew in about 1990! The Wellington £5 was issued with the signatures of various different Chief Cashiers and with different serial prefixes until 1990, when it was replaced by a smaller note depicting George Stephenson, the railway pioneer. The Wellington £5 was withdrawn from circulation in 1991 but can still be exchanged at the Bank of England.

My second note from 1971 is a Spanish 500 pesetas The front of the note depicts Jacinto Verdaguer, a renowned poet from Catalonia. The reverse shows the Canigó massif in the Pyrenees, which featured in one of Verdaguer's most famous works. Strangely, the typical Catalan village depicted on the note has been identified as Vernet-les-Bains, which is actually on the French side of the border! This puts the note in the same category as the Jordanian note with the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem: a banknote showing somewhere outside the country of its issue. I suppose the Bank of England Wellington £5 and Nightingale £10 also come into this category, as the vignettes on their reverses show a battlefield in present-day Belgium and a hospital in Crimea!

Lovely banknotes, everyone! There are a lot of beautiful vignettes today. No notes for me today or tomorrow, so I'm a happy spectator. Welcome to the CCF and to the thread, SchwarzerEinser!

1970 100-franc note from France, with the portrait on both sides showing the famous 17th-century playwright Pierre Corneille. He is shown in a Parisian theater on the front, while the reverse shows a view of his home city of Rouen: The view of Rouen shows the Cathedral with its original spire. This was destroyed by fire in the 19th century and replaced with a new spire of similar appearance but made of... cast iron! During minor repairs in 2024 some construction materials that had been placed by the spire were accidentally set on fire, but, being of iron, the spire was fortunately undamaged. These 100F notes were in circulation when I was living in France in the late 1970s, but I didn't save one at the time (100F was a lot of money). After the euro was introduced in 2002, members of the public had another ten years in which to exchange notes in francs for notes in euros, but since 2012 these notes can no longer be exchanged, and circulated ones like this can be picked up for a fraction of their original face value.
