Very nice mismatched note, CollegeBarbers! 1961 Czechoslovakia 100 korun - a happy worker and farmer on the front and a lovely vignette of Charles Bridge and the Old City of Prague on the reverse: This note had a long life in circulation. It should have been replaced by a new note in 1985 depicting former Czech President Klement Gottwald. However, Gottwald was very unpopular and was seen by many as a tyrannical leader who had put many of his opponents to death. The Gottwald notes were demonetised after democracy was restored in 1989, and the 1961 issue was retained in circulation, being finally withdrawn in 1993 after the split-up of Czechoslovakia into the separate Czech and Slovak Republics.

My second note from 1961 is an early example of the Bank of England's last ten-shilling note design. These were signed by Leslie Kenneth O'Brien, and were the first Bank of England notes of this value to bear the Queen's portrait. Inflation in the 1960s meant that more and more of these notes were required, but they only lasted a few months because they were used so intensively. They were replaced in 1969 by the seven-sided 50 pence coin, equivalent to 10/-, even though the changeover to decimal currency did not take place until 1971.

It's a slippery slope. - I hear you!

1960... My first note is a 1960 5-Deutchemark note from what was then West Germany. The front shows the painting "Portrait of a Venetian Woman£ by Albrecht Dürer and the reverse shows an oak twig with leaves and acorns. The 5-mark note circulated alongside a coin of the same value, which was always much more widely used than the note. My second note is a very early A-prefix Bank of England Series C pound note signed by Chief Cashier Leslie Kenneth O'Brien: This note was the first English note to bear the Queen's portrait and circulated from 1960 to 1978.

Quote: The 5-mark note circulated alongside a coin of the same value, which was always much more widely used than the note. I remember this note circulating, and later its "successor". As a child, getting a 5 DM note as change always felt special. Also interesting: the first coins were made of silver, but when that got too costly (and before the bullion value could exceed the nominal value), the design was changed and a copper-nickel version was introduced. I mainly remember the last version, because it was introduced in 1975. The older 5 DM note remained in circulation until 1992. I would like to share this "NSFW" note (PMG says ND (1960)) for this year:

Quote: I would like to share this "NSFW" note Very cool overprint! For 1960 I have this P-35 £5 from Australia https://en.numista.com/202364What I think is interesting about this note is the juxtaposition of Agriculture imagery with the Aboriginal boomerang/shield on the reverse. My second entry is this £5 from the tiny Falkland Islands https://en.numista.com/212058Love the simplicity of the reverse design.

@schwar, thx for the warning about the bank note. Having visited St. Pierre and Miquelon last year, I can say with confidence that coolness of the climate for those islands wouldn't permit that sort of ensemble. Reunion Island on the other hand may be more hospitable to fewer layers of clothes.

Quote:@walk2dwater very nice notes, they're exactly my taste.... -Fantastic notes SchwarzerEinser and walk2dwater! -Thanks guys! For 59' I have only 2 notes, so lets roll em out: The first is a "destination note" from one of my favourite sunny get-aways. I feel very bad for what's happening in Cuba & pray that the situation changes soon. This P-93 100 Cuban Pesos has original colour & is a perfect gem UNC example: https://en.numista.com/219536 If you check Numista's entry on P-93, you'll see that the b version (or 1960 date) is actually a much more desirable (scarce) date (rather than the 59 version)! Hopefully, I can catch one of the 1959 "Che Guevera" versions someday! My 2nd note is not in as stellar condition as the 100 Pesos, but I think I like this note equally as well. It is only an AU55 (according to PMG) but I would grade it more as a top shelf EF It is a large P-267 £20 from the National Commercial Bank of Scotland & features the gothic railway line of the Forth Bridge on the back: https://en.numista.com/225282

Lovely notes, walk2dwater! 1958... Cuba 5 Pesos... The front of the note depicts Máximo Gómez, a hero of the Cuban War of Independence, with a vignette depicting the machete attack he led against the Spanish at the Battle of Pino de Baire in 1868. The back shows scenes from Cuba's tobacco industry, with a plantation on the left and a cigar factory on the right.
