I mentioned cleaned medals. So I am showing one of mine. This is a good example of what could happen to medals in the possession of collectors with idle hands a century ago. Some decided to improve on them and make that copper shine.

Wiener-Medal,-Cathedral-Of-Cologne,-First-Medal

This is my most unfortunate cleaned medal. It is still a beautiful medal. The workmanship of Wiener was extraordinary. The level of detail he could put in a 6 cm medal. And the high relief.

Fortunately the collector who cleaned this medal took care to not damage the reliefs. He then applied varnish which still stands up well and preserved the shinny look. I would like a brown patina better. But only the scratches on the obverse are ugly. The pure shinny copper is nice.

The series Wiener and his successors did for the building of the Cologne Cathedral may appear with legend in german, french and perhaps other languages. As it happens with its other architectural medals.
For this cathedral which was still being finished he had a very good idea. Issue several medals showing the progress of the works. I think this is the first one of that series.

It's unfortunate about the cleaning, but still a nice medal, jecz79.

It is a lovely design. I am glad the previous custodian did not completely ruin it. Thank you for sharing.

Thanks. I have one in nicer shape from the series, and same origin. The cathedral of York. This one also has the legends in german. Part of a collection brought from there in the fifties.

Wiener-Medal,-Cathedral-Of-Cologne,-First-Medal

A detail of craftsmanship. This one has high relief on one side and the other side excavated. The excavated area in one side matches high area on the other. I do not have proper calipers but the medal is noticeably thin there and the depth of the reverse would be impossible without matching relief on the obverse.
This one is 10% lighter that the one for the Cologne cathedral, with high relief on both sides.

The bright copper is nice. The original brown patina that can be seen intact around the top of the towers must have been lovely.
This one was only lightly scrubbed. I think it would easily regain its brown patina. But I will leave the varnish on. It is now part of their history.
