I picked this up recently in an internet auction. I was bidding on the coin for its silver and didn't really pay much attention to whatever that stuff it was in. After receiving it I looked up the Certi-Grade Certification Institute but could find no more information than is on the "slab".
The coin seems to be accurately graded. It is in a vinyl flip stapled to a glossy photograph of the coin. The coin information and Certi-Grade information is printed on a piece of paper which is folded over the photograph and glued in place. All is held together by the staple.
If anyone has any information about this company and their "slabs", please share!

Now THERE'S a blast from the past. I haven't seen one of these in years.

Here's your answer:

Certi-Grade-Certification-Institute-

Back in the day (1970s and early 1980s), Colonial Coins (Dr. George Vogt) was at that address and phone number. They were a prolific advertiser in most numismatic publications around then and were in a lot of coin shows in the region.

They weren't fly-by-night at all. They were a big player and had some fantastic coins.

Leave it in that "slab." You have a rare bird there.

Thank you, fortcollins!
I had done a forum search but that yielded no results.

You are very welcome, my friend! In addition to having his coin shop, Vogt was a big-stakes collector. IIRC, he had a couple of the major rarities. I can't recall which ones, but definitely at the level of a Brasher or 1804 dollar or proof-only Trade dollar or the like. I don't think I ever did business with him, because most of my clients were working on Buffalo or SLQ or Seated sets. He had some nice coins, just not the ones I was looking for. I do remember those DIY certifications, though. If he's still around, he would be quite elderly. I'm old, and he would have 25-30 years on me. His grading seemed spot on to my eyes on his inventory.

Well, this was sure my random old person trivia catch for the day! Enjoy that rare critter.
