That is a fantastic coin, Marv!
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

Great looking 39-S... Crazy they don't "take off till 67" 67! I was gifted one from my sister, who got it from a friend, in a 2x2 graded (by whoever) GEM BU I believe it's every bit a 66... I'm just not willing to send him in so see what "they" say. He's gonna stay in his 2x2 in my pages of LWC's. I guess because there are sooo many in the grade...Year and mint...it's not worth it! You found one that somebody thought the same thing I was thinking... Good for you! I think he's a pretty coin! smat

Thank you smat and jbuck. Quote: Crazy they don't "take off till 67" Right - that's why I bought this one - "The price was right". I'm guessing the 2 small "blems" on the obverse kept it from a higher grade.

Too much light, blowing out the surfaces. Appears to be LDS, die wear ridge obvious from the L to IN near the rim on the obverse. The obverse high points/devices not fully stuck, worn die. The reverse is very well struck, nice O! Some minor field marks and spots, likely amplified by the strong light. The 1936-39 LDS coins are very lustrous and the TPG's like luster. The toning looks too light for RB but perhaps your pics cut though. 66RD

Late to party! hahahahahaha, looks like I agree with them.
Where's the reverse in-slab picture? The obverse slab pic changes everything!

Just move your light source and camera farther from the coin surface, it's penetrating the surface patina. I used a CFL for 20 years. You're better off replicating the second picture with the camera far away and cropping out the coin like this:

YES! That looks way more natural and probably closer to the in-hand look!
