That R has been worked over on the die? Or was it only that the die was breaking and the R came out damaged?

The date has that known error in the legend. But I could only find one bad photo of such coin to compare and the die that struck it was not as worn as on this one.

A possibility is that the leg on the 'R' may have been obliterated by grease in the die.

I am not presently well served with cameras. Here is I think a clearer photo of the detail.

Looks to me like the die is on its way out. The A next to the R isn't very clever either, and there's a die-crack further round.

I am 95% sure that is the R/E in GRATIA It has the same continuous line of the foot of E and the spur from the E's middle Serif . Would need to see it under high mag to tell though

I'd also lean towards classifying it as "cracked and chipped die" rather than "overpunched letter".

Thank you. The die is cracked but I do thing there is more to that R. These overpunched letters, I have read about them but could not easily find good photos to compare.

I will try to produce a better photo. And show it here if I can do one. But I am not really equipped to do macro photography. This sovereign stays in my collection and some day I will get a better camera, lens and support.
