Quote: This kind of makes me want to get more high end, NGC slabbed coins. A "random" purchase of two graded Ikes from Bobby encouraged me to build the graded Ike set.

Thank you, my friends I haven't been active much lately because I haven't been making any purchases due to how expensive my last one was. That said, payday is here and we also got a wonderful bonus at work. So, that said, I will be making some more purchases very soon! I am planning to go to the really nice LCS near me that I got my albums from. They had a pretty fantastic looking 1890. I can't remember the grading, but it had to be at least F-XF. I'm hoping they will still have it. I am also considering buying not only the 1886 and 1912-S slabbed, but also the 1884 and 1894. But, I'm not sure. Maybe one day. As far as I know, those are semi key date coins sort of, and it would be nice IMO to have them slabbed as well. As far as I can tell, keys - 1885, 1886, 1912-S semi keys - 1884, 1894 and possibly the 1888

Thanks, jbuck. Good to hear from you, too. So when I got down to the LCS, the 1890 V nickel looked cool and all. It was cleaned and pretty noticeable. It had a high amount of detail still, though. I opted not to purchase it as I'm trying to match my set a certain way and didn't really like the way this coin looked in regards to that. I did, however, walk out with this 1884. It was pretty heavily worn, but given the significance of the 1884, I figured it didn't look too bad and actually kind of like the amount of circulated "patina" it has to it... if you could call it that Not too bad The reverse is kinda rough, though. I also picked up this pretty nice 1873 Shield nickel. They had some other nice ones there for more, but I had to have this one. I might have to take a few more shots of the Shield nickel, as these don't really do it justice! They also had a really nice 1874 and 1872. I may have to go back soon and pick them up. They were a tad bit more than the 73.

I don't think I've ever had a wasted trip to this particular LCS. They have so much. In fact, going there with a large amount of money is probably unwise for me Here's a little closer look at the 1873 I bought Reverse Here's an interesting comparison.... This is the 1873 "closed 3" variety

Very nice additions. I figured it would be awhile for the dust to settle down on the major purchase before getting anything more

@ EV, Seamonkey, thanks guys Yeah, I was very careful to not put myself in the dog house again lol This coin store I go to is very nice, though. They literally have boxes and boxes of coins to go through to choose from and various prices. Whenever I go there, I just pull up a seat and dig in! Most of the people that come into this particular dealer are more interested in bullion, and not coin collecting. Obviously, not all coin places are created equal, though. I've been to some that barely have anything. The one that I frequent also has some pretty decent 1886 and 1912-S Liberty nickels, both with reasonable prices. I think they come in at around 100-130 bucks. I wanted to buy them slabbed initially, but if I can save a few bucks, I definitely will. I'm certainly glad I bought the 1885 slabbed, though, being a nearly 300 dollar coin.

Great album sets!!! You and I are on the same road. My Liberty nickel run is down to three and I'm about to begin the Sheild, which has been on my mind since early fall. Thanks for keeping us updated.

Thanks, Ballyhoo! Interesting! I would like to see that. What are you planning on housing your Shield nickels in? Honestly, this was one of the most annoying issues initially when trying to start a set of these. Also, are you missing the Liberty nickel keys? Are those the three you're missing? I thought about on the first page of my album, doing all "higher grade" coins. Then on the second, possibly doing a lower grade set without the 1885, 86 and 1912-S. I'm also considering in the future just collecting straight up worn V nickels as well. Honestly, I think they look pretty cool, depending on how worn. I might buy some random lots of them just for fun, as they can be had for pretty cheap. I have a random, blank Dansco binder that basically just has nickel pages in it, so this might be a neat little endeavor. I'm gonna focus on the task at hand first, though.

I visited a different coin store today and I was offered an incomplete, older style album of Liberty nickels for 13 dollars. There was 13 V nickels in there, so I figured, eh, why not? This was an OLD style album. I think the brand was Harco? I like the way the coins are displayed, but I don't think the actual storage method is... Practical. So, as I mentioned, there was 13 coins in the album. Nothing too crazy. But, ironically, a few of them actually looked a little bit nicer than the ones I have in mine or have more detail. 1883 no cents 1895 1897 1898 1902 1903 1904
