The following coins were received by me in change for cash purchases. This excludes coins found in CoinStar machines. I decided not to bother with the extensive year/mint breakdown this year.

Total: 485 ($61.17)

Average value of 12.6 cents for each coin.

Dollars: 7 ($7.00)
No Halves
Quarters: 164 ($41.00)
Dimes: 87 ($8.70)
Nickels: 55 (2.75)
Pennies: 172 ($1.72)

Dollar notes:
1 SBA, 3 Sacagawea and 3 Presidential. (All received in change from a vending machine when I bought a candy bar with a $10 bill)

Penny Breakdown:
Shield Zinc: 86 (including 1 2025-D)
Mem 2000-08 Zinc: 31
Mem 82-99 Zinc: 31
Mem 80-82 Copper: 5
Mem 70's Copper: 12
Mem 60's Copper: 5
Wheat Copper: 2 (57-D, 56-D)

No Canadian, foreign or silver coins found in change although I did get some from CoinStar finds.

These will be CoinStarred this weekend and a new collection will be started. I am debating whether to hold on to the various pennies but I probably will just keep a few 2025's as I find decent condition examples.

To this point (2026 January 1) I have received very little from the year 2025 . And I do use cash quite a bit. Maybe 2 cents and a 1 or 2 quarters. For what it's worth.

I haven't figured out how to quote reply, but I found the 2025 Cent breakdown by n9jig interesting. I handle very few coins in current circulation and hadn't realized the population of Cu Cents is now so low. 14% out of 172 coins.

Mem 80-82 Copper: 5
Mem 70's Copper: 12
Mem 60's Copper: 5
Wheat Copper: 2 (57-D, 56-D)

When I leave this life, someone is probably going to have to lug off more than 100 pounds of the things. The vast majority are circulated, sorted by year and mint, and rolled. I haven't knowingly spent a copper cent since 1982, heh! I know, that's a hoard, not a collection (circulated roll collection?)

Happy New Year 2026 folks!

I used to have a fairly large collection hoard of copper pennies, as well, enough to fill a dozen plastic shoe boxes.

I sold off my entire collection a couple years back as they were just taking up space. I made out pretty well, selling it along with the rest of my collection hoard.

So I stopped by the local CoinStar and apparently to get Apple Gift Cards there is now a 3% fee and they do not offer Amazon Gift cards at all. They used to have both and with no fee. For the cash option in addition to the now 12.9% skim off the top they charge an additional 99 cents.

They did offer other no-fee gift cards for restaurants etc. but none of them interested me so I bit the bullet and absorbed the fee for the Apple gift card. The coin count was spot on. One of my dollar coins (79 SBA) was badly damaged (probably a Dryer Coin) and would not go thru the machine so I will have to spend it someplace.

Bummer with the fees. An Apple gift card would be useless for me.
