I'm gonna say this coin is undergraded. No evidence of any dipping.

1879-Morgan:-PCGS-Misgrade?

It will still sell cheap, probably. I would submit for a re-slab myself if I didn't have to sell so much this year.

That grade is ridiculous! I have to wonder if PCGS seriously evaluates the items the receive. They are laser focused on market grading and protecting their registry sets. My latest order from them was full of misgraded and misattributed items. I had two Morgan dollars given details grades (cleaned) that are obviously not cleaned. DO NOT send them Buffalo nickels because they just don't know how to grade them. I'm cancelling my membership with them and won't be back. I may try NGC or CACG if I have something of high value that needs to be graded in the future. For run of the mill items, ANACS is my go to group - I haven't had any complaints with their services.

If someone will buy the coin rather than the holder, you should get a reasonable price for it.

I agree the coin is undegraded, but not a good buy to crack out and resubmit. The coin does not have enough value selling at MS63 to cover the additional grading fees. A nice example at MS61.

First it looks like an old ANACS soap box crack out to PCGS.
The rim toning looks similar. MS 61. I think they got it right .
Coin really has too many marks and there are slide abrasions on the cheek .
In the 80s we called these Commercial UNCs or sliders

I've only been through maybe 500 slabbed morgans in my life, but in within that limited experience, I have never seen such a nice MS61. The coin is pleasing, artfully toned and has considerably fewer marks than I often see on 63s. It is, alas, a ridiculously common date, and there are no shortage of nice MS 1879s.

Wow 61 didn't see that coming. I had it at 64 using my Quick Scroll Grading process which is slowing scrolling down and viewing the entire coin (obv/rev pictures) all within 10 seconds and then give it a grade. Figuring that be the the length of time a professional grader might have it in their hands. But now seeing the grade and zooming in on the coin I can see this at 63.........62 for lack of luster, but a 61...wow
Good luck on the sale....Pleasant toning would make that coin a wonderful 7070 coin. IMO

Bump111, Be very careful, you are being watched by the dealer whose face is constantly plastered all over YouTube, he peaches for PCGS (then gets his submitted coins higher grades).

IndianGoldEagle I agree with you on the MS63; however, the OP has been using, I believe, the same picture of this coin, which makes it hard to tell for the "Luster" appearance.
