I collect gold commemoratives from the mint. I know many are going to say I'm foolish, but as the saying goes, "It is what it is (how could it be anything else?)/ I just did some calculations and figure that the 8 commemoratives scheduled for release this year, at current price of gold, and only getting proof issues (also I'm counting Comic Art releases) it's going to cost in the neighborhood of $23k. Time for drastic action. I'm seriously thinking of cancelling my Morgan dollar subscriptions. |

I am of the opinion that gold should not be used for commemorative issues. Bullion coins, yes. Add it to your stack and stick it in a vault. That's it.

When it comes to re selling later on, most new issues rarely recover their new issue price, due to high premiums, at the time of original purchase.
Therefore,
how about buying old (previous) issues on the collector after market at coin shows ?
With diligent searching, some can be obtained at close to AGW or ASW values.
That has been my experience.

1) I've been collecting gold commemoratives since about 1995.
2) I have gone back and purchased older issues, or those I missed.
3) I acknowledge that there is a big premium and that buying bullion for the same amount paid for a commemorative will yield a greater profit.
4) There are outliers to #3. For example I have a complete set of American Liberty commemoratives. Those since "Bucking Bronco" have done well.
5) I don't drive all that much, and when I do I have a very comfortable vehicle that's fully paid for.
6) I agree with NumisEd......sort of. In that I don't think commemorative issues in gold should be more than a 1/4 ounce to make them more affordable to the masses, and even that is stretching it.

I have collected gold commemoratives for the past 20 years with a few from the mint, others from ebay and coin shows. I stick mostly to the $5 commemoratives but as of late these are over $1k each so my continued collecting had been hampered by price. I am glad I started years ago as all of them are worth more than my purchase price based on melt value. I will continue to look for additions to the collection at near melt cost.   |
