I have what may seem to some to be a stupid question. Why can I buy rolls/bags of quarters, halves and dollars directly but I can't get rolls/bags of nickels, dimes and previously cents?

I'm sure there's a logical explanation but since this is after all a government run operation I doubt it

I think you just answered your own question. I've ordered from the mint only once in my life for the 2016 standing liberty gold. Signed up and said I wanted email communication only....No physical ads coming through the mail. Spent the next 2 years fighting to get off their mailing list.....

The rolls and bags are for the popular collector coins, while there would probably not be enough sales to justify the others.

I would think, and of opinion only, that the cent, nickel and dime are common everyday coin used in transaction. Back in 2005 and 06 the nickel redesign was offered direct, as were the 2009 cents for the same reasoning. Had it not been for the various programs the quarters would also be on the current list as not available direct. I believe the lack of use in commerce, the half and dollar, to be the sole reason any of them are availabe as such. In short, coinage found in the financial system is and could be obtained from mints authorized amored carriers. Which is possibly the answer if you asked someone in the know.
