I notice the RAM has changed the layout of its circulating coins pages and now includes coins minted by Perth Mint.

https://www.ramint.gov.au/collect/n...ns/two-cents

Numista has also recently added them (1975-1983)

I've never really paid much attention to 2 cent coins and don't remember mention of Perth Mint minting 2c coins from 1973 until 1983.

Note that I'm not talking about 1966, 1967, 1968 coins minted by " Royal Mint Perth Branch"

Are these a recent 'discovery'? Have they always been well known but ignored in mintage figures because they were not minted by RAM?

If they exist how are they distinguished from coins minted by RAM?

They have always been known about. Grab any decimal coin catalogue, from the 1980s through to the latest edition Renniks, and you'll find it mentioned.

What has always been less clear to me is whether the "blunt first claw" mintmark used on the 1966-68 coins was carried through on these later coins, or the Perth-minted coins are essentially indistinguishable. I've certainly never seen any marketed as such, and there's no price difference in the catalogues.

Note: a "RAM roll" - an actual mint roll with "Royal Australian Mint" on the wrapper - will always be Canberra-minted coins. A Reserve Bank roll might be Canberra, Perth, or a mixture of circulated coins.

Here are a couple of perth mintmark(privy mark) dated 1973 and 1974. 1975 and onwards look like a canberra mintmark but clearly blunted, whether this is just wear is not clear.

Just to be clear, the " Royal Mint Perth branch" which minted the 1966-1968 'Perth' coins and the Perth Mint which minted the 1973-1983 'Perth' coins are different organisations, right?

If so, what is the likelihood they would have the same/similar mint marks?
