I found this 1943-S in my collection and am not sure what to make of it. It generally seems like it is in nice condition but the "LIBERTY" and "IN GOD WE TRUST" are all flattened. There is some slight doubling on the date/mint mark too.
Is this a worn die? or post mint damage? what would something like this grade at?
Likely grease plugging up the die. Steel is very hard and difficult to strike. It's common to see some anomalies with these. Nonetheless, it looks like a nice example.
I'm not certain, but I also thought it looked like a Grease Filled Die even before I read BadThad's post. The lettering of LIB, IN GOD WE, and the AM of America all have that shallow, flattened look of fill clogging the device cavities.
