I've been trying to test the (horrifying-sounding) new upload system, and was stymied by the fact that most of my images are in PNG and apparently the only accepted formats are JPEG and GIF.

Both of those are lossy-compression formats, which means that anything with lines and/or text - such as, for example, screenshots of spreadsheets - will be full of horrible artifacts.

I'm pretty sure it used to be possible to post such files (when they fit within the size, which is surprisingly often for such relatively simple pictures) in non-lossy formats. Why was this option removed?

This is from the old file before the upgrade, All that's changed is I added webp a few years ago to the end. That file was used for at least 8-10 years before webp was added.

You've uploaded one PNG file since you've been a member. It was in 2017.

I'll try allowing them, and we'll see, no promises, and they will still optimize on upload. They will likely take a while, too.

If you're making them undergo lossy compression anyway (which seems to be the case if I interpret you correctly) there's no need.

In practice if I needed to upload a PNG file (after doing that directly became impossible) I used whatever random online converter I googled up that day (that had a lossless setting) to convert it to WEBP, then uploaded that. I suspect that most WEBP files I uploaded before this year were those; it's a pretty rare format otherwise.
I'm not sure if those would now be lossily-compressed too even if they're under 300 kilobytes. If yes... I guess Imgur or whoever are my friend now.

2017 sounds plausible. I guess it doesn't feel that long ago...

The error message I got must have been older than that, because it only listed JPG, JPEG, and GIF.

What in the world is wrong with the sreadsheet screenshot I uploaded above? I uploaded a PNG.

Every single image you've ever uploaded here, except one, is a lossy image. Why the hell is it so much of a problem now?

I mean, really? 99% of images uploaded here ever are lossy images. Probably 99% of images on the internet are lossy for crying out loud.

I guess it's just awful memories of trying to do geometrical diagrams in MS Paint and crying at how the JPEG files come out with all those ugly squares...

Also for the simple PNG files often the JPEG will be larger than the original even if lossy. Not sure if that's still true for WEBP.
