I have been building up a small variety reference collection. Currently, the lower grade coins are housed in folded bits of paper with scribbles, separated by varieties into Ziploc snack bags. The better coins are in clear pocket flips in a hard plastic 2x2 box. I do that because whenever I want to re-examine or refer to coins, I need to locate them quickly, remove them easily, examine them, and then return them to storage. Maybe the Whitman blue plastic boxes with pocket flips is the right solution to this collection. However, I am reluctant about that option because I have received so many ebay coins in clear flips that have trapped moisture problems and sometimes PVC-like surface issues from the flips.

I had previously assumed that albums really snapped coins into place like a folder. Lately, I have seen some videos of collectors adding and removing coins from Dansco albums with relative ease. Could an album (Dansco or otherwise) support the use model of removing, examining, and restoring coins? Because it seems that albums store coins far more compactly than the blue 2x2 boxes, and solve many of my moisture and surface damage concerns of the clear pocket flips.

I don't think Dansco is the way to go for what you describe. Not only will popping the coins in and out of the cut out wear the hole out, it isn't very convenient to remove both slides and pop the coin out. I have all of my best coins in Danscos. I love them. Taking them in and out is a bit of a pain. Just my opinion.

Would there be any downside to enlarging the holes a tiny bit, or using a larger diameter denomination page? Would the coins sliding against the protective inserts be a problem? Recognizing that pulling coins in and out of clear pocket flips rubs them on the surface twice.

Why can't you use 2x2's and put them into a 20 page pocket and then into a 3 ring binder of your choice.

I thought the plastic binder pages caused all sorts of long term problems with coins?

I am really not a fan of the clear pocket flips, although I cannot really debate their cost effectiveness and flexibility.

Some can. The better ones do not. Look for archival quality and non-PVC in the description.

Dansco does offer albums for the 2x2 cardboard holders in plastic pages - I already bought a few of them, works out well if I'm moving things around often.

Indeed! I have a few myself, although my plan is to move everything to the standard holed pages.

Their original vinyl pages were the bad kind, but they are only bad when you keep them in an unstable environment that causes the pages to break down and release the nasty stuff.

However, Dansco eventually changed the material to be safer and I did not want to take chances, so I replaced them. The downside is the safer pages lose the thing that makes bad pages good: flexibility. Over time, the more rigid good pages start to come apart—especially if you like to move things around. I have had to replace a page or three every few years, which is what prompted me to shift everything to holed pages (a work in progress).

To be clear, this is not just a Dansco thing. Any good vinyl page is going to have this problem, but they are cheap enough to keep some spares on hand and replace a page when it get damaged. Still better than the alternative.

My pleasure. I am pretty sure you have the safe pages. I did the swap 20 or 25 years ago. I bought a bunch in bulk, swapped them out, kept the spares for expansion or replacement as needed.
