The raised area behind Lincoln's head is part of the lamination issues, before it actually peels away complete l y. The copper is not bonded properly and probably starting to separate due to temperature fluctuations. Words of encouragement are one of the major food groups. So the strike was originally flat in that area then after the heat created from the strike dissipated the metal rose up? That sounds like a possible solution. Maybe a gas bubble was trapped in the planchet from the bad mix as well an expanded after the strike . Report this Post to the Staff

It could have been from production, but I'm thinking more likely from seasonal changes in the temperature. Maybe even laying on a table or in a coin tray in the sunlight.
