Should we be selling or buying at these strong silver prices? I've been selling small amounts (under 10 oz) over the past few weeks to reduce my exposure to coins and rebalance my investment allocation a bit.

As a collector, I am keeping by default. Even then, I do not think the prices are going to go back down and holding on to what I have is the better play.

I agree both silver and gold will not go back down. I would not sell any until the price get stable. Meanwhile, will try buy in collector coins at spot price whenever possible. Who knows what would happen, maybe people still want to pay a certain premium over spot for collector coins.

My gut says the good stuff will get melted along with the rest. The lower population will raise the numismatic premium as long as collector demand remains.

There's one reputable coin shop where I live ( Reno ) and they have had to institute "emergency hours" as they are also buyers / sellers of PM. . .this was posted at it's website:

Quote:
Due to unprecedented market conditions and rapidly rising precious-metal prices, [ Co. Name ] is implementing temporary emergency adjustments to its purchasing operations in order to responsibly manage liquidity and continue serving the public.

Effective immediately, we will be purchasing items from the public between 9:00 AM and 1:00 PM only.

These adjustments allow us to maintain the necessary liquidity required to continue purchasing from the public on a consistent and reliable basis during periods of extraordinary market activity.

Our stores will remain open until 5:00 PM for order fulfillment and retail sales; however, no purchases will be made from the public after 1:00 PM.

Silver services, candlesticks, flatware. . .could see it in COSTCO sized tote boxes, stacked up behind the counters.

That coin shop is not alone, cptbilly. I've been watching some youtube videos with coin dealers talking about the current silver situation.
The problem is that these shops have more customers coming in to sell than coming in to buy. Most small shops operate on a tight margin so you can see the problem they are having. Some shops are closing early so they don't have to personally turn customers away.
Coin shops can sell their excess silver to refiners and get some of their money back. But now some refiners are not paying for seven to ten days and they are not quoting prices up front. This adds to the difficulty that these shop owners are having.

Yet here we are with Ag & Au down significantly and holding steady. Gravity (aka Sanity) will always pull any meteoric rise back to non-speculative, non-doomsdayer levels. I'm holding all my gold and silver regardless, coins or raw, because for me precious metals are super long term (non-monetary failsafe) investments.
I swing a metal detector and have a knack for finding dirty old coins.
