Every once in a great while, I find a really pleasant nickel that I tuck away. I liked the golden toning on this 1975-D nickel.

That is indeed a beauty.

And a great photo to show the coin in all its toned beauty.

Well found.

It's a common date because they made 400 million of these and they can still be found in circulation. Most boxes will still have about a dozen of them. Most people don't realize though that every single one of them will be low grade and beaten to death. This date was pretty nicely made but most do exhibit some strike deficiencies especially with alignment. Nickels of this age are usually in F and nearly half are culls because of excessive marking or staining. The other half looks a little ragged because of small dings. Just finding a nice attractive VF is a challenge and this coin is orders of magnitude more difficult yet.

In 1975 I was roll hunting nickels trying to create a roll set. I came a lot closer than most would imagine and even found three '50-D's over the years. I tried to save every nice 1971 I came across. Over the years I sold or spent all of these coins except the Gems I found. There weren't many. Just a few rolls all dated after 1960.

Your coin stands out farther as an improbability than almost any coin I ever found. Yeah, I know, every coin is unique but they can be categorized as well and for a '75-D found after half a century this one is almost in a category of its own.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

Thanks, guys. =)

I have to agree with cladking, finding a 1975 nickel in this condition is unusual. Those steps should have been worn away—I think the weakness along the bottom is strike weakness, not wear. I imagine that this was maybe a folder coin, recently liberated. Who knows where this Jeff has been hiding for 50 years? =)

Beautiful specimen. Jefferson nickels are one of my favorites.
