Some recent developments that make the current situation different from the one that existed in 2011 and 1980. All 60 critical minerals identified by USGS, including silver will be included in the Project Vault stockpile.

Silver is considered part of the U.S. critical minerals framework as of late 2025, but it is not currently held in the National Defense Stockpile (NDS) as a strategic reserve. Silver was formally added to the U.S. Geological Survey's (USGS) list of critical minerals on November 6, 2025, recognizing its importance to national security and clean energy.

Key details:

Critical Mineral Status: As of November 2025, the U.S. officially added silver and copper to the list of 60 minerals deemed vital to the U.S. economy and national security.

Strategic vs. Working Stock: While not in the primary defense stockpile, the U.S. Mint maintains working stocks of silver for producing coins.

Historical Context: Large, historic silver stockpiles from the mid-20th century were liquidated by the government, with almost all of it gone by 2000.

Future Outlook: The 2025 designation as a critical mineral may lead to future government initiatives to strengthen domestic supplies.

Although officially classified as a "critical mineral," it should not be confused with the strategic, combat-ready reserves held for long-term defense purposes.
