The United Kingdom changed to Decimal Currency on Monday February 15, 1971. That date the decimal halfpenny, penny and twopenny coins were released into circulation:

Guernsey, Jersey and the Isle of Man introduced their own decimal coins too. The British colonies (now Crown dependencies) of Gibraltar, St Helena and the Falkland Islands also adopted decimal currency on the same date, but did not issue their own coins at the time: they were supplied with British coins from The Royal Mint.

Popular singer Max Bygraves sang a song called 'Decimalisation', which was used as a jingle by the BBC for its public information broadcasts, rather like the Australian 'Dollar Bill' song...

Cute song, Rob...

"The halfcrown too is gone for good,
A coin that foreigners never understood!"

Somehow I think Mungo Jerry would have done a better job with this material, or even Lonnie Donegon!

Today, the USA is criticized for continuing to use imperial units of mass, length, and volume. But, our coinage has been 'decimal' from the beginning in 1792, with the dollar as the base unit divided into 100 cents.

I agree. I think they chose Max Bygraves as he appealed to the older generation who were more likely to have concerns about the changeover, so if he was seen as supporting it, it might persuade them that decimal currency was a good thing. He was a kind of British Perry Como and used to present evening variety shows on TV.
