I came across this NGC graded 1950-S quarter in an online auction. It's graded MS67*T...and for the life of me I can't figure out what the T means.

Anyone ever see this before?

What does the T mean?

From what I can find it is supposed to be for toned, but that was one forum post on NGC from 2003 and not an official source. Very nice Washington by the way, not much toning though in the photo.

In NGC coin certification, the "T" designation meant "Toned"

I don't see it

The "T" designation was an NGC letter used on the experiment slab labels, meaning the coin was "Toned".
They also used the letter "W" on the old labels: designation for "White" non-toned.
So I believe NGC made a mistake (error) and put a "T" instead of a "W"...

I didn't realize they used the star that far back. It's an old holder.

Yeah, I almost kinda thought it might be a counterfeit slab because the font was all wrong. Then I realized it was an OG slab...

Looks to be a Gen 8 slab. T was indeed for a "Toned" coin and a W was for a "White" coin.

NGC Gen 8:
This holder was produced Aug 2000 - Sept 2000 for 4 weeks. It has a revised front label with serial number moved below barcode and a slightly larger rear hologram than Gen 7. It's designed proved unpopular and was quickly discontinued... Rarity ~ Uncommon

EDIT: Your slab was incorrectly labeled.

Hey, Marv, if you are going to quote, especially from copyrighted material, please give us the reference.

John put a ton of effort into consolidating prior works, new research, and finally giving us a home for the information on his site OldSlabHolders.com: https://oldslabholders.com/ngc-slab-generations

He also created a custom registry set at NGC:

I swear I did - I highlighted the web URL I must have not posted it.

Oh I see what I did, I put it in my favorites. Oh well, mistakes happen. Sorry I'm not correct all the time, I'll have to be more aware so nobody else will get upset!
