Hazing In 2025-S Clad Proof Sets (Pennies And Native American Dollars)

Blackhawk New Member United States 17 Posts	Posted 02/17/2026 9:00 pm I purchased two 2025-S Clad Proof Sets from the US Mint last year. When I checked the coins, they appeared fine. Recently (February 2026), I opened my proof set boxes again and to my disappointment, found that the Lincoln Penny and Native American dollar had a noticeable haze about them. (The Jefferson nickel appears to have hazing as well). I am uncertain if the haze is on the coin surfaces or if the haze is beneath the plastic lens/case. When I tilt the lens at an angle, the haze seems to disappear and the shiny proof surfaces can be seen. Question: what is the best way to tell if the haze is on the coin surfaces or in the case? Marv65 Bedrock of the Community United States 10472 Posts	Posted 02/18/2026 12:48 am It happens sometimes. Any chance of opening the case to see? If the haze is indeed on the coins then a quick dip in acetone will remove it but you have to be really careful to not touch the proof surface and only use distilled water to rinse and canned air to dry the coins. For what it is worth, all my set coins get moved to albums. I keep the OGP in another box. In theory I could put everything back to how they came and no one would know. Chase007 Pillar of the Community United States 7504 Posts	Posted 02/19/2026 11:00 am It has been my experience that the hazing develops on the coins surface rather than the casing and I think mostly due to the fact that these casings unlike the older sets are not sealed and air get's through, but as mentioned it would be worth opening them carefully to see first hand if it's on the coins or not.
