I am a new member here who has recently gotten into collecting
Peace dollars. I was at a local coin shop this weekend and bought a few common
Peace dollars (3x 1922 and one each of 1923, 1924, and 1925 all Philadelphia) for $5 over melt each.
These coins are nice but I noticed a few interesting features I wanted to ask about. I could not find much information searching the internet so I would greatly appreciate your help.
- One of my 1922 coins has a strange flat section of the rim right under where it says PEACE. I am curious as to if this could be caused by a die issue or if it is some kind of damage (my theory is it could have been an end coin in a $20 roll that somebody dropped).
- This coin is shiny and quite clean, but the finish is different compared to the other coins I have. I am worried it might be a "cleaned coin" as I have heard of people "dipping" silver coins to clean them. How would I determine if it has been cleaned or if it has the original mint finish?
I bought all these coins from a reputable shop and "ping tested" them to make sure they are all real. As I get into rarer/more commonly faked dates/coins, is there anything else you could recommend for me to check? I am aware that there are a lot of fakes floating around.
Here are the pictures of my coin:
