About the Role
Trust and authenticity are foundational to ebay's collectibles marketplace. As a Counterfeit Specialist, Coins, you'll play a critical role in protecting buyers, supporting legitimate sellers, and preserving confidence in coin collecting by strengthening how counterfeit coin risk is detected, assessed, and mitigated at scale.

This role will support our enterprise-wide anticounterfeiting efforts within the Intellectual Property Risk & Compliance team. This role is critical to ensuring accurate identification, assessment, and mitigation of counterfeit coin risk across the marketplace.

As a subject-matter expert dedicated to counterfeit coins, you will help develop and maintain high-quality knowledge base resources, deliver expert insights grounded in real marketplace data, and collaborate cross-functionally to drive timely, well-informed counterfeit mitigation strategies across Legal, Risk, Product, and Business teams—helping protect buyers, sellers, and the integrity of the collectibles category.

What You'll Do
Counterfeit Coin Identification & Analysis: Review listings, seller behavior, images, descriptions, and transactional signals to identify counterfeit, altered, or misrepresented coins with high accuracy.

Numismatic Guidance: Apply deep knowledge of coin authentication, minting characteristics, grading indicators, and known counterfeit patterns to identify potentially problematic listings.

Knowledge Development: Create, maintain, and continuously improve counterfeit-related knowledge resources, guidelines, and training materials to support consistent and accurate enforcement.

Model & Prompt Enablement: Provide expert insights and real-world examples to improve model prompts, detection logic, and decision frameworks based on observed marketplace trends.

Marketplace Insights: Analyze counterfeit patterns, emerging risks, and enforcement outcomes to inform proactive mitigation strategies.

Cross-Functional Coordination: Partner closely with Legal, Risk, Business, and GCX Operations teams to align on counterfeit risk assessments and execute timely mitigation actions.

Execution Support: Support investigations, escalations, and enforcement actions by providing category-specific counterfeit expertise.

Quality & Accuracy: Ensure high standards of accuracy, consistency, and defensibility in counterfeit determinations and documentation.

Continuous Improvement: Identify gaps in tools, processes, and coin-specific knowledge and recommend policy enhancements to strengthen ebay's counterfeit coin controls

What You Bring
4+ years of experience in counterfeit enforcement, trust & safety, compliance, risk, investigations, or a related field

Strong understanding of counterfeit risks and marketplace enforcement models.

Demonstrated ability to apply policy and knowledge frameworks to real-world marketplace data

Experience translating expert judgment into operational guidance, knowledge bases, or training materials

Ability to assess risk using images, metadata, and behavioral signals at scale

Ability to synthesize complex information and deliver clear, actionable insights

Strong collaboration and communication skills across legal, technical, and business stakeholders

Comfort operating in a fast-paced, evolving environment

I think this is great!!
I wish they'd do something about the outrageous posts of common coins with hugely exaggerated asking prices. Sure, caveat emptor, but I cringe at the thought of someone with more cents than sense falling for the temptation of an "extremely rare 1966 Lincoln Penny, no mint mark, multiple errors", for $1,700 (or more).

Kind of low pay for the knowledge required and responsibility involved. Pay more get more.

But if this is real it is a step in the right direction. Which we all know is long overdue.

Wonder if this is for one position, or perhaps one or two additional. Yes, pay seems a bit low. The caveat "employees will be in an at-will position" and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time" should bring much merriment to the work.

Given the depth and breadth of the numismatic counterfeit issue within the ebay universe, one 'specialist' position performing as described might not have the voice and tools to accomplish what we forum members expect.

It would probably be an ok job except for dealing with the in-house legal team whose main objective might not exactly align with what yours is. It could see it getting pretty heated sometimes. I don't think I would have the patience to deal with it.

Maybe they outsourced it to a company with direct to consumer counterfeiting expertise.

They may have hired someone. I reported a fake CC Morgan slab and coin yesterday, and it was down in about 6 hours.
