It toned. Could be due to improper storage, chemicals left on it from the mint or any number of other things.

Hard to say exactly why it toned unless you were the one who stored it
but it sure didn't leave the mint looking like that.

Environmental toning.
Quite common for cupro-nickel 5 cent coins to tone, after all they're 75% copper.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...
